Glen Road Pedestrian Bridge Nears Completion with Deck Casting

Toronto's historic Glen Road Pedestrian Bridge, a vital connection between the neighborhoods of Rosedale and St. James Town, is undergoing a significant transformation. For over 130 years, this bridge has facilitated both road and foot traffic across the Rosedale Valley Ravine. Now, a new replacement bridge is set to enhance this historic route, featuring a multi-use trail with a 4.8-meter wide pathway and a span arrangement of 30m - 100m - 30m.

Elevated 20 meters above Rosedale Valley Road, the new three-span frame bridge boasts inclined legs and a superstructure of three variable-depth steel plate girders supporting a 200mm thick concrete slab. This design not only improves functionality but also adds aesthetic value to the area.

The construction, led by Eiffage, is nearing completion with the concrete deck casting finished last week. Spannovation Consulting Limited has played a key role, working on behalf of Eiffage to develop a deck casting sequence and haunch profile to achieve the finished grade specified by design engineer Morrison Hershfield. This process involved a detailed staged deck pour analysis to balance the geometric deviations of the structural steel girders from the target geometry.

Using survey data provided by Eiffage, Spannovation conducted a staged construction analysis to simulate structural deformations from sequential deck pouring and concrete hardening. The most suitable pouring scenario was selected, with necessary adjustments to haunches, studs, and reinforcement to ensure post-deck pouring elevations aligned with intended finish grade elevations. Earlier, Spannovation's involvement extended to erection engineering of the structural steel, ensuring the strength and stability of the progressive structural stages and geometry control on behalf of erector.

The project remains on track for the finishing works, with Spannovation supporting the contractor during casting operations to ensure structural integrity and stability, maintaining the critical path and schedule. The Glen Road Pedestrian Bridge's deck pouring is now complete, marking a significant milestone in this transformative project that promises to uphold the bridge's historical significance while enhancing its functionality and aesthetic appeal.
