Pattullo Bridge Replacement Project
The Pattullo Bridge Replacement project was awarded to Fraser Crossing Constructors General Partners (FCCGP), a partnership between Aecon and Acciona. Chosen by the Province of British Columbia, FCCGP is tasked with the design, construction, and partial financing of a new four-lane cable-stayed bridge over the Fraser River. This new bridge will be located just upstream and northeast of the existing bridge and will improve network connections to New Westminster and Surrey, featuring a center safety median barrier, wider lanes, and dedicated walking and cycling paths. The existing bridge will remain in use until the new bridge is open to traffic. Once the new bridge is open, the existing bridge will be removed. The new bridge will be built to allow for potential future expansion to six lanes.
Spannovation is providing construction engineering services for the 500m cable-stayed main bridge. Our duties include engineering the means and methods for erecting both permanent and temporary components, construction staging analysis for structural steel, and design of associated temporary works such as: pier-table tie downs, temporary wind cable anchorages at the deck and tower foundations, falsework, and shoring towers - one of which is a significant semi-permanent structure located at the midpoint of the end span.
The 35m tall TP3 temporary tower supports the 84m end span during the erection of structural steel and deck casting, resting on two braced pile column legs on concrete spread footings. Temporary bearings at TP3 are designed to handle loads up to 12.5MN, allowing for movement of up to 300mm during extreme events. Provisions have also been made for jacking the superstructure to address anticipated settlements over its 6-month lifespan.
